Yup sadly cheap and Boston don't go together too often. I would strongly suggest checking various half off coupon books, such as the one by Entertainment and I know there are several others. I've had great luck getting discount hotel rooms that way.

How far would you be willing to drive? I can think of a few places closer than the one's listed, but they are still going to be a bit of a hike, especially given traffic. Also I'd check the various Boston tourist web sites to see if there are any hotel promotions. I know some of the hotels offer weekend specials, and you might hit something especially if you aren't coming peak tourist times.

The terms "Boston" and "cheap motel" are mutually exclusive. There is an Econolodge in Malden (2 blocks from junction of rtes 60 and 99) and a Red Roof Inn in Woburn (near junction of Rtes 95 and 93) which are probably the least expensive places that can be found which aren't dives.
