why did Jeffrey Eugenides chose the title "The virgin suicides" for his first novel?

There is a reference to the song "The Virgin Suicides" in the novel. Also, besides Lux, all the girls were virgins. In a less literal sense, they were all virgins anyway. Becasue of their youth and lack of real world exposure, the girls were a little naive, another virgin reference.
