I'd recommend HP or Compaq, but it does depend on what you're going to use it for. Almost all new computers now are going to run Vista. Also, be aware that they don't generally come with full versions of Microsoft Office, only 60 day trials, especially when purchased from a retailer as opposed to on line. As far as warranties go, I'd say purchase an extended warranty from the retailer you purchase it from (i.e. Circuit City, Best Buy, CompUSA, etc.) Circuit City has the most comprehensive plan. Also be aware that Circuit City's technicians are licensed by HP/Compaq to service the machines in-store so it's faster because it won't need to be sent to the manufacture.

You can get a pretty good laptop for under $1000 these days. The question is, what do you want to use it for? Are you looking for very light/portable? Do you game?

I recommend ASUS highly. Great build, great components.

After that... if you do your research, you can get a lot of bang for your buck with Acer, but make certain you research the model. The have heat issues with some.

After that, probably Compaq.

DONT LISTEN TO JOE....right now HP is doing great with selling PC laptops under 1G. Dell and Toshiba are worthless and have critical issues with hardware and batteries that will incinerate and also are lame in design...if you do choose a dell get it fully costumize under 1000 dollars.

ithink u should really consider the brand HP. they make affordable computers and don't have alot of junky hardware. unlike Sony Vaio(which i think is the most expensive) the hp gives you good hardware for a good price. they also come in very stylish cases:)

Dell have great warranties and are well built so are Toshiba. There are cheaper laptops around but they are made of balsa wood.
