Most of these answers are wack. Of artists out today (very few good ones) Nas, Talib Kweli, Black Thought (from the Roots, the whole group doesnt rap like the first answer implies), Common, possibly Immortal Technique.
Greatest lyricists all time would start out with either Chuck D from Public Enemy, or Erik B. (run dmc aren't considered great lyricists lol). Qtip from a tribe called quest. Biggie Smalls. GZA from the wu tang clan.

Fun lyrics- Ludacris
Meaningful Lyrics- Kanye West (even though we've boycotted him) & Nas
Best writing- Jay-Z

run dmc, no question. without dmc, you would have NONE of the artists of today. maybe sugar hill gang as well.
