This is going to sound bizarre (it did to me), but everyone I've asked on various chatboards in the past has told me that the Z stands for zombies. I don't know why anyone would feel compelled to say "zombies, oh my god/gosh," or why it would catch on and so many people would attach "zombies" to the start of their oh my god/gosh, but that's what multiple separate sources have told me.

A Wiki article on Leetspeak says it's an accidental evolution: "the mistyping of . . . A similar derivation comes from the location of the Z key next to the left shift. When typing words such as OMG, it has become common to instead type ZOMG to simulate the accidental typing of the Z in an effort to press the shift key."

However, one place I asked about ZOMG was at the Kingdom of Loathing, where players seem quite familiar with Leet, and they still gave me the zombies answer. I'd think that the zombies answer is what you tell people who ask and don't know, but friends have also told me this: that plus the number of places easily tells me it can't be an in-the-know conspiracy.

But I have to say that the Leet explanation makes far more sense than the zombies thing. I'm going to go with that explanation from now on.

An older Yahoo Answers question got the reply of the Leet explanation and a Warcraft origin possibility associated with "zerg":

and an Uncyclopedia entry includes most of these possibilities/explanations, with still more added. It's hard to tell what is helpful or true in there, though. (I mostly add this reference for humor's sake and to suggest how wild explanations can get.)

Haha, it's actually just a retarded twist on the conventional "omg", or "oh my god".

I only use something like "ZOMG!" when I am making fun of one of my online friends for saying "omg" too much. But your friend might just be twisting the conventional Oh My God acronym into her own little thing.

Anyways, what she/he means by it is just simply, "Oh My God", or "Oh my Gosh" if you prefer.

:] Hope that helps!
