Diffusion is the general category for random movement of molecules from a high concentration to one of a low concentration. Osmosis is a type of diffusion. It involves water and a semipermeable membrane. If either one of these things is missing osmosis does not occur. So osmosis is the diffusion of water through a semipermeable membrane.
