A few glances in various directions are normal and I find no problem with it. However, when the person I am speaking to looks away at something more than he or she looks at me, I find it very disrespectful. I've found even very shy people will make an effort to make lots of eye contact with you in a conversation if they're generally interested in it. If the person is not on the shy side, than he or she may just be disinterested in the conversation or atleast the words that come from your side, or they may be trying to hide something or feel guilty about something. It is not impolite to ask them to face you when you speak to them, so if you must, speak up and tell them to look at you. If they continue looking away alot, just end the conversation and find someone else to talk to.

No, doesn't bother at all. In fact I think it is rude or disrespectful to stare straight at the eyes while someone is talking. To me it is standoffish and rude. If someone wanted to listen to what I say they would either look elsewheres while glancing at me or at my hand gestures. When I listen to someone Im always intently paying attention looking down and glancing at them to make them know that I am still with the person talking. If some people think it is rude then would have to think twice, because it is not rude if I am paying attention to them and not staring straight into thier eyes. Staring into someone's eyes is very distracting. I end up staring back at them and almost forgeting what the other had said.

I believe the eyes are the pathways into someone's soul. I believe it is none of my business and should avoid eye contact.
To me the facial expression gives away the most also. That is another reason I do not look at someone. Because most people show thier true emotions when it comes to dealing with people at the store or work. Everyday people like cashiers or salesperson most time show some kind of dissatisfaction towards thier jobs. Who wants to look at that? Instead I say what I have to say and get what I have to get and leave. I don't need to feel or recieve others rudeness.

Conclusion: To those who think avoiding eye contact is rude. It is not so true for most people. They are listening and they are in tuned to you. Think twice. Don't take it so personally or the wrong way!

Yeah! But I used to not be able to make eye contact with people because i was so self conscious that people would find faults on my face. It was really weird, but now I always look at people in the eye cause I stopped being stupid :]

But when people don't look you in the eye it kind of makes you feel like they aren't paying attention or they don't care and they're only listening becasue they dont want to tell you to shut up.

Yes, it certainly does! You know that when someone won't look you in the eyes it is usually because they are hiding something from you, or outright lying to you. However, I have heard that in some societies that women are not allowed to look directly at a man when they speak to them. However, in america it is different and in all of my experience, when someone won't make eye contact with me when they are speaking to me, it makes me very leary...it has nearly always turned out that they were not being honest with me in one way or another. Eye contact is vital to me, even if it is just to know that you have someones attention when you are talking to them!

No. People process information in different ways and therefore speak/interact with you in different ways. Neurolinguistic (NLP) programming deals with the way people process information and communicate. According to NLP, everyone processes information in a combination of three ways: Visual, Auditory or Kinestetic.

Some people process information visually, they learn by seeing. Visual people need to see everything...these people look you in the eye when they talk to you.

Others process information aurally, they learn best by hearing something. Auditory people may turn their ears toward you when talking. They rarely make eye contact.

Still others process information kinestectically. Kinestetic people process information through their bodies, through their emotions. They will often keep their eyes DOWN towards their feet while talking to you.

Audio and Kinestetic people are not being rude or deceitful by not meeting your eyes, they are trying to understand and communicate with you in their own way.

I always find that when someone doesn't want to make eye contact, they are either shy, unsure of themselves, or have something to hide (could be they are lying). So yes, it bothers me something fierce.

Yes, it does. I don`t like to talk with people who wear dark glasses or cover up their eyes. I don`t feel they wanna make a real contact with me.

It bothers me, but I also realize that it has more to do with the other persons' self-esteem than myself.
Good luck.

no.

i usually do not. and i do not expect others to do so.
eye contact is a waste of time.
your brain can perform multiple tasks simultaneously.
keeping both your ears and your eyes on someone, may get you miss something important.
of course, if you have nothing else to do...
