When starting,starter will engage but grinding sounds and will not start. pulled starter and its fine. Any ideas?

It could be that you have a bad starter clutch, it is a one-way gear drive on the end of the crankshaft. The starter turns it, and so turns the crankshaft. First pull the point cover off the right side of the engine so that you can see whether or not the crankshaft is turning (you could put a wrench on it a this point to make sure that it is free to turn). If the starter motor runs but the crank doesn't turn you'll need to repair/replace the starter clutch. It is under the left side cover of the engine, and you may need a special puller to get to it.

When you have the starter out you can put your finger in the hole and rotate the reduction gear. It should turn free in one direction and lock in the other.

The starter clutch is probably bad. It consists of a round housing with three pins and three springs. They are at an angle and engage against a round portion of a gear. The parts that fail the most are the springs. Chatter on the machined surface of the gear will also cause a failure. The three allen bolts in the starter clutch housing can also come loose and cause a failure.

This is a very sturdy set-up. The bike must either have many miles on it or the oil wasn't changed very often.

Other things to check:

Does the starter motor turn at the correct speed? If battery charge is low, the starter may not be turning fast enough to engage the clutch. Worn brushes will also do the same thing. A starter motor with worn brushes will growl under load and turn slow.

Other causes of failure or slipage would be a carb that floods the cylinder causing a high compression situation where the motor won't turn over. High compression from carbon build-up will put a strain on your starter and clutch also.

If this is an older 650 it should have a kick starter also. Does it start and run using that? If not then your starter clutch would be a secondary issue to the problem.
