You are correct that people do not walk around in kimono/yukata all the time. The best time to see traditional clothing is during a festival. When I was in Tokyo, I couldn't help but think that it looked like a bunch of little cities that just happened to be right next to each other. In some cases, this is true, because Tokyo has consumed areas that were once separate from Tokyo.

It's definitely an awesome modern city. I didn't spend long there, but I don't think it will disappoint you! Good luck in fulfilling your dream!

Over the past hundred years Tokyo has been destroyed by a major earthquake, fires, and WWII. Add in the Japanese custum of constantly tearing down and rebuilding homes and you'll notice there is very little of old Tokyo left. (If you want old Japan, go to Kyoto or Nikko). Almost everything in the city was built in the last 50 years.
Tokyo really isn't ONE city. It's more like a group of cities connected by random lines. If you look at map of Tokyo, it looks like it was drawn by a blind man with Terets. Fortunately, Tokyo has probably the world's most convenient train and subway system that can bring you anywhere (signs have English and everything is color coded). In fact, most parts of town are often refered to by their station name. So as long as you can read a subway map, you're fine.

Here's a good website that describes it quite well

ive been to tokyo this winter and my moms tokyo and i have relatives in tokyo and ive lived in tokyo for a little bit, and i might be attending college in tokyo this year...and all i have to say is that time squares got NOTHING compared to Tokyo...tokyo is soo high tech and modern and such a vibrant city....some people think its time square on speed, and it can be true...theres soo much to do and see and they have crazy fashion, which can be cool, and japanese culture is great. i dont think any other major city is as modern as tokyo, and their subway system is perfect, the trains come literally every 2 minutes when in NYC youll be lucky if they even arrive in 10 min..i should kno i live 15 min away from nyc.... i love both cities and i wish they were closer next to each other.....hope you visit beacuse it is such a great city and a great country....

Tokyo is a metropolitan city. It is crowded with its dark side and bright. It is shopping paradise if you have the money. Lots of drinking and partying. Multicultural restaurants. As well as the traditional Japanese culture.
