Some species of lungfish breathe only air: they have no gills and will drwon if forced underwater. Why might it be an advantage for lungfish to breath air even though they live in water?

Can't they stay on land for brief periods of time? That's an advantage to stay away from predators.

They live in really muddy puddles. The clay mud would gum up their gills if they had gills!
