umm. it really does depend on what style of dance you are doing and if you would like to take your shoes off. I also depends on the choreographer and the dance. I think you should check with the teacher first.

No,not always.Only when I go for eastern dancing,I mean classical.But I always have my shoes on while doing Jazz,Hiphop,Salsa,Waltz etc.
U may have ur shoes on only if u feel comfortable else u will not be able to concentrate on ur dance.

traditionally in modern classes students are barefoot, but that can be difficult for beginners who havent developed calluses, they have developed special shoes that are skin color to give the illusion to the audience that the dancer is dancing barefoot

i love dancing barefoot, but it's hard to do turn with no socks or shoes.

Well, it depends. If I am in class for:
Tap - No
Ballet - No
Jazz - Sometimes. I either wear "Foot Undies" or socks.
Lyrical - "Foot Undies"
Modern - Yes, you are supposed to
Hip-Hop - Never!
At home - Duh!
