Some of the old folks might remember what they were. Obviously CDs have many advantages, but I miss the album covers and the "ritual" of putting the needle on the record, sometimes. Remember 45s and the spindle for them?

Heck, CDs are now making way for downloads. What will be next?

Yes, I didn't mention the difference in sound! For example, The Beatles' engineer Goeff Emerick wrote a book, and he said the songs were mixed for vinyl and should be heard that way!

The sound is indeed different on the CDs. I noticed that right off. Also, the recording consoles and mixing desks used in recording make a BIG difference. Sgt. Pepper made today, in a 24 (or more) track or more studio set up, just wouldn't sound the same.

I DON'T miss the skipping and scratches, though! :)

LPs are alive and well. There is an entire industry now out where LPs are released the same day new CDs are... of course it's not the same good old oldies we would like to hear.
And one thing you neglect to mention is the warmth of the sound. I haven't heard a CD yet that made me feel like the performer is in the room... digital hiss is so common, nobody seems to notice or care.

The album covers and the rituals were fun - but after the records wore out, my mom used to make flower pots from them. Put them in the oven over an empty clay flower pot and the heat of the oven would melt the record, making it droop in even waves around the pot. There was already a hole in the bottom for the spindle, so when it cooled, you could invert it, paint the outside in psychedelic colors or whatever tasteful color scheme you wanted and fill it up with flowers.

I still have some LP's. Scratches and all.
And the analog sound is much warmer.

But flipping the album after about 20 minutes of music is annoying once you are used to CD's.

CD's use (.wav) files---huge size and pretty good sound.

Downloads (.mp3) are usually much more compressed (smaller) file sizes, but much more loss of fidelity.

What is next? Good question...

Since a lot of musical lyrics today are about sex...
Hip/Hop and Rap in particular...and very popular with young people that think vinyl is only for "cheap coats".

those LP's were awesome way before the new age where people can get music for free illigealy albums had awesome huge covers. I still listen to the beatles's and many other bands and recording on them and my parents say it brings back memories of growing up with friends.

I still have all my old LP's and I still play some of them once in a while. But when they figure out an easy way to transfer all of them to a hard drive, I'll probably get rid of them. At that point, CD's will be history as well.

honestly I don't miss LPs. something about accidentally scratching them kind of annoys me. I like being able to go crazy with a cd in the player and jump around and not worry about the cd getting ruined.

No.
I have over 4000 LP's and 12" singles, all lovingly preserved.
I still buy vinyl from my local record store.
