They come from the Box Elder Tree, it's really a type of maple. They swarm on the outside of home, mostly brick, because bricks hold in heat, when they mate.

You need to get rid of the tree or spray a boundry of your home with Sevin.

Box Elder bugs love (obiviously) Box Elders, but they also like Japanese pagoda trees and Golden rain. Seal all the cracks in your house and remove any mulch from around those trees and foundation in fall. Otherwise, good luck, hard to get rid of.

Also known as maple bug or Stink bug

In the spring, the bugs leave their winter hibernation locations to lay eggs on maple or ash trees

These insects can be killed with a dilute mixture of soap and water -- 2 tablespoons per gallon -- sprayed on them directly. They can also be kept out of the home, to a degree, by putting boric acid and/or diatomaceous earth in places they would gather to enter, as well as by using weather stripping and other means to seal the house better.

box elder bugs gather on 'warm' surfaces in the spring and fall... they are flat insects mostly black in color with red or dark orange lines on them. we control them with Malathion (available at the hardware store!)
