I have a five week old baby boy. He was 8 lbs 3 oz born and now at five weeks in already pretty much 12 lbs. My pediatrician says its fine as long as he is eating and making frequent wet diapers (which he does). I bottle feed and he eats 4 oz. every 2 hours if I get 2 1/2 hours out of him I am lucky and he has been eating like this for atleast 2 or 3 weeks. Does this seem normal?
Also he got thrush so I just started him on meds from the doctor. Could this have anything to do with it? Any other women have babies with thrush? Does it take long for the baby to get over it? My angel has been having a little problem eating this last couple days due to this I think. He will eat 1 or 2 oz then getting fussy then I wait a little bit and he will finally take the bottle again.
Thanks for any advice! :)

I thought it was alot of weight for him to gain so quickly too but he is quite long as well 24 inches long last time we checked. I thought about maybe putting rice cereal in his formula but the ped said not to that he will eat when he is hungry and its ok when babies are that young. So I guess if he ped says so then it is ok?

Wow he has gained alot of weight rather quickly and for most babies that is alot to eat as well...but you know your son and know when he is hungry...and it is kinda hard to tell a 5 week old that they aren't hungry.
As for the thrush(my youngest daughter has had it several times due to the medications she has taken since birth) you should notice a difference rather quickly when using the medication properly and should be totally cleared up in 7 days(remember to keep giving the medicine to your son even if it clears up quicker as it can and will come back) It is also very uncomfortable on the tongue(imagine having a hairy tongue in your mouth) so therefore it can cause them to not eat as well as usual.
Best of luck to you!

Da Ja Vu!! My son was the same way. I tried to BF but I couldnt do that and sleep at the same time so I switched to bottle and he still ate every 2 hours.
The weight gain is normal! Just remember they normal loose a lb before they leave the hospital and just as quick gain it back! He sounds very healthy,
As for the thrush.. my youngest had that too. It usually takes about a week for all that white gunk to clear up. It does "interfere" with eating though. So dont worry if he gets fussy while taking his bottle. That wont last too long.
Congrats on the new lil one!

My son was about the same as yours. He weighed 8lbs when born and almost 12 at 5 weeks and now he is tiny. I have a suggestion about thrush. You will think I am absolutly crazy because most people do. My daughter got thrush, and someone told me to take her to someone who has never seen their father and they can cure it. I did because she cryed alot and wouldnt eat. The thrush was gone in less than 1 week. The lady told me that God give her that gift to cure the thrush. It really did work. No meds at all

my son is 3 now, but as a baby he suffered a lot from thrush, mainly he would get it when he was teething. change his nappie very frequently, and let him have it of for a bit, so the air gets to it. why don't you try increasing the oz of food and see if baby will go longer with out a feed. or move up to the next stage milk (hungry baby milk)

sounds like he gained a lot of weight fast, but if hes hungry, then feed him. Do not put rice cereal in his bottle, thats not good for him. Just keep doing what your doing, formula is the best. Try increasing the 4oz to 5, he might go longer without eating.

my daughter had thrush when she was 10 months old. It definitely affected her eating, she would take a few drinks stop and cry, and then start again. It cleared up about three days after she got her medication. Good luck and know that it will get better in a few days!

I wouldn't be too concerned with his weight, yet. But it is a little high. Then again, he sounds like he is at the top of his class in length. 100% I bet.
Don't starve him, but slowly try to get him to eat every 3 hours. When he gets hungry, distract him for a little while before feeding ot train his little body to wait longer.

My baby had thrush, it was soooo stubburn.
It took a month to clear up, the only thing that helped was Diflucan.

Both my daughters had it when they were born. I never knew what caused it but it was kind of nasty, and I felt so sorry for them. Just keep giving your baby the medicine and hopefully it clears up soon. Good luck.
