Coyotes, wolves and mountains lions were the main threat to free range cattle herds. Wild horses were the biggest threat to the food supply eating up as much of the free range grasses, and sometimes getting in hay left by the rancher, and of course there were always cattle thieves, who usually ended up killing more cattle than the ended up stealing.
