I can't remember exactly why, but i believe it was because they thought he was more of a intellectual and a guy that would be beneficial behind the scene. rather than a man who could be a politcian in the limelight with charisma and glare.

Why didn't they choose him for what? Washington was elected as the first President, and Alexander Hamilton was his Secretary of the Treasury. He was, in fact, a powerful leader and voice among the Federalists.
