Modern humans are defined as Homo sapiens sapiens (the second "sapiens" is the sub-species). Neanderthals are classified as Homo Sapiens Neanderthalensis (the sub-species is neanderthalensis). This classification was made because many believe that modern humans and neanderthals were able to interbreed-- and so classified as the same species-- two types of humans.

While "homo" does mean "man--mankind", recent mitochondrial DNA evidence suggests that neanderthals were not that closely related-- you may want to bring this to your teacher's attention. The details can be found on the website below. Neanderthals may now just be considered to be a pre-cursor to modern man or a side-branch (like different species of squirrels, so to speak)
