George Washington was the first president elected under the Constitution. However, John Hanson is often referred to as the first President. He served from 1781-1782 as President of the Senate under the Articles of Confederation which preceded the ratification of the Constitution.

Do you really need to ask this question? Shouldn't you kind of know something like that if you live here? If you don't, pardon my bluntness, but if you do I'll be concerned for the future... For the record, it was George Washington. John Hancock (for whoever said that farther up) was the President of the Continental Congresses before the country was independent. Besides, when someone refers to the President, they typically mean as per the Constitution, not the Articles of Confederation or anything before that.

The question reads "who was the 1 president"? The 1 president. Not the 1st president. So, I'd have to say George W Bush. Even though the question asks "was", not "is". So, mmm, maybe not. But, I'll stick with it.
