Hi just recently bought a iPAQ h5500 and i cant turn it off. If i press the on/off button it just puts it on standby and if i hold it down it just turns the backlight off. How do i properly turn it off?

I have an iPaq and have had that problem too. Here is what I did:
First, try the small reset button on the side. You will need to use the tip of a pen for that, and it will reboot your iPaq. Then try the on/off button and see if it works.
Next, go to start menu / setup and system to select the self-test program that will test your ipaq. That may identify the problem.
If that does not work, try a complete reboot, but save your data as it will completely clear all memory. The best way is obviously a complete synchronization with your PC. Press the reset button on the side and keep pressed for about 5 seconds. That will put the ipaq in the out-of-the box condition. Then try the on/off button.
If none of that work, return it for servicing -it's a hardware problem .

I had same isue with ipod.
What you need to do is, worked for me:
go the the main menu, and try turning of there, it doesnt turn of when your in a third or 4th menu etc.

had the same with my typhoon.
one press takes it to standby but a double press shuts it down...2 quick presses, not holding it in.
