There really is no best computer,just a lot of good ones. But Alienware has some high end sytems that are amazing,along with ABS,ibuypower,systemax,cyberpower.

Shop around. ID the computer features you want. Sounds like a cliche, but if you ID software you going to use (like photshop for digital photog or media center for digital music). Once you ID the feautres you want, you can shop for the best deal and any stores will have them.
I'd stick to the electronics stores and away from Wal_mart so if you do have questions they can be answered confidently. I had good experience with BestBuy and CompUSA. I didn't try Dell online becuase I did not want to wait for my laptop to be shipped. But they will design a PC around what YOU want. Which is a good option.

You can buy high quality computers from Toshiba Direct. Most of their new computers have Windows Vista, but I think that you can still buy one with Windows XP.
