Personally, I believe California has it all: Several major metro areas, as well as mountains, deserts, and the BEACH! However, you need to do your own research. What's best for me might not be best for you. One excellent place to figure this out is findyourspot.com, where you select the things that are important to YOU, then you get an email with a list of places. You have to give them your email address, but you can always just give them a yahoo account if you want to keep your privacy.

It just depends on who you are, but all of America is for the most part a great place to be. You have so much freedom. If you are asking because you want to visit or move somewhere, take into account what you need from the area you will live in, what jobs are there, what are taxes like, how's the weather, how populated is it, does it have a nice church or place of worship. For me, I would love to live in Pennsylvania, but that's just me. There are lots of small towns there, and beautiful mountains and farms, it is very historical, and there are a few large cities too (Pittsburg, Philadelphia, Harrisburg, Reading, Erie, Lancaster, Altoona.)

this link is the ranking of states as being "most liveable" but...it really depends on what you like. Good weather? California. Cheap housing, definitely not California. :D Low Taxes? Nevada, Alaska, Arizona, Kansas. Sort of have to figure in all of the factors, including your income, leisure activities, desires.

Personally, I love PA, we've got it all, from the historical places (Philadelphia), to the mountains, rivers and forests. We still have the small towns (where people take great pride in where they live) and communities where people still care about their neighbors.
After spending most of my life in NYC, PA is paradise on earth. Best thing I ever did was move out here!
