I use Qwest DSL. It works fine when I'm at home. But sometimes I need to get online when I'm not home. So far, I have not been able to use my laptop when I'm away from home because the internal wireless doesn't work too far from my modem. So what can I do?

First thing - you can't. Second thing - the internet is free BUT you must use an ISP to gain access and they are not in most cases FREE. Third thing, if you use a 'hot spot' and if it is not an open hot spot to the public but is a private persons/company's account with an ISP you are breaking the law and can be charged.

All wireless hotspots are not free. Those by T-mobile will cost you. When going out, you should check for wireless availability in the area you will be. If there is none available, then you have two options.

Option 1 - If you have a SMART phone like a Treo 650 or 700 or Motorola Q, then you can connect them to your laptop and use it as a modem. The 650 will run at dialup speeds while the others will run at broadband speeds.

Option 2 - Purchase a cellular aircard. They are free with a two year contract (if you have cell service with the provider) otherwise the card is $200. The monthly service is where they get you, $59.95 a month for unlimited usage. Verizon, Sprint and Cingular all provide aircards.

similar what the other guy said, Cingular has a wireless card for 49.99 a month, and verizon has one for 59.99 a month, so what ever cell phone service you got, go with it.
