I am due October 10th! I had the same problem except the doctor called it a bleed, he said it was small tear in the uterus or a pocket of blood that got trapped when the sac was attaching to the wall. I freaked out because I was spotting at 6 weeks, the doctor said it would dissolve itself if i rested and took it easy and it did. That it wouldnt hurt the baby. So far so good, the baby had a great heartbeat last ultrasound I had. Goodlucck to your friend.

It's really too early to say anything right now. The doctor will be able to tell more later on as the baby grows. What comes to my mind is placenta previa - where the placenta covers part or all of the cervix. It does cause some bleeding. Or, placenta abrution where it actually seperates from the uterus before the baby is born.

It's best not to worry your friend. You need to be with her for this very difficult time. If she starts to worry it will only make her condition much worse.

BESIDES, you just don't know...it could be absolutely nothing and just heal itself in a few months. I was diagnosied similary - with my placenta partially covering my cervix at 6 weeks. By the time I was 23 weeks the placenta had moved up and I had no more issues with the placenta.

Does she have any problems with blood clots? I would def have her call the doctor immediately because honestly the tech isn't supposed to say anything before a doctor sees it. Tell your friend not to worry to much before she knows... if it isn't inside it most likely will not hurt the baby... and depending on what it is they can operate... they have come a long way with a lot of things. I wish your friend the best of luck hope all goes well! Oh one more thing... sometimes a woman continues to ovulate when she is pregnant, it is not often but sometimes they do, and that could be what the sac is... it does look like a little thing of blood... but in no way harmful!!

"Blood does accumulate within the uterus because of the further development of the mucus plug."
