They Were Expendable - John Wayne 1945 A wonderful character study of a PT squadron during the early days of WWII. Very real and very heart breaking. A must see if you've never seen it.

That's a real stumper. I'm inclined to agree that SAVING PRIVATE RYAN is the best because of its thought provoking premise and realistic portrayal of men in combat. But, if you look to the past, when they were making a lot of war films, some stand out as pure classic gems. THEY WERE EXPENDABLE, with John Wayne. OBJECTIVE, BURMA, with Errol Flynn. THIRTY SECONDS OVER TOKYO, with Spencer Tracy. PATTON, with George C. Scott. There is also a little known Australian film called THE LIGHTHORSEMEN, a true story of the last mounted charge in history in WW I. I highly recommend all these films.

The Thin Red Line.

Truly an amazing film. The story, the writing, the directing, the acting. It's an amazing film. No one else has mentioned it. Maybe everyone who answered should see this.
