Anyone really think this stuff works? If so how much do you think is needed to actually start things?

You mean to start labor? The castor oil is a laxative and it crosses the placenta and baby gets it too. It acts as a laxative on baby too and he/she may have a bowel movement in utero because of it. This is very dangerous and possibly life-threatening to baby if it is breathed in.

DON'T USE CASTOR OIL!!!!!! I've said it on here before, and I'll say it again. Castor oil can make you so sick you wish you had died. It can cause severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, vomiting, and if you do go into labor, you will be sick the whole time, and that isn't fun at all. If you aren't full term yet, relax. If you are at full term, talk to your doctor about how to get things going. Until I know how far along you are, I won't tell you what to do. If you are full term, let me know and I can give you some suggestions that seem to work almost all the time. Good luck and don't take castor oil!!!

I heard mixed things re: castor oil. Some say it works like a charm, others say it just causes bad cramping. What I have researched is that it can cause fetal distress. Your baby can aspirate meconium which is not a good thing at all. I am just over 39 weeks pregnant and am looking for SAFE ways to induce labour. I personally would not take it for this reason. I would try sex, walking, eat pineapples, eat spicy foods, raspberry leaf tea. But in saying this, I have tried it all and am convinced that baby will come when he/she is ready. Just do a bit of research on it as you don't want to jeopardize your baby's health when he/she is nearly there. Good luck!

Castor oil to relieve constipation works but it is NOT TO BE USED BY PREGNANT WOMEN. Castor oil comes from caster beans and that is where one of the deadliest poisons on the planet comes from, it called ricin and that is why Castor oil works so well. go see your ob/gyn for a proper laxative

i wouldn't do it if i were you. i believe because it is a laxitive it irritates your bowels which stimulates the uterus to contract, but just let your body do what it needs to do naturally. i am a nurse and i had a patient who took some castor oil before she came in and she had diarrhea the whole 8 hours of labor. she was so embarrased because her room smelled soo bad and it was really hard to check her cervix or even go in the room at all because of the mess and the smell. i am warning you, if you want to ruin your labor experience go right ahead.

Oh don't do it. I know a lot of women who tried and all they managed to do was give themselves hours of pain and discomfort on the toilet.

Honestly though, don't try to force yourself into labour. Speak to a doctor, they know best. If there's any danger to you or the baby they'll induce you or give you a c-section. If there's not danger, and you're not very far over-due, the baby will come out when it's ready.
