If you have an employee who took 8 hours to do a job before a technology came along and then it took 4 hours to get the job done after the technology, what would you do? I would find someway to get 4 more hours of work out of that employee. Maybe double the amount of work I expect them to do or something. No reason to pay an employee for 8 hours of work when only four hours of work are being done.

That is what happened to the free time. Technology allows us to get more work done in the same amount of time. If we speed the technology up we don't end up working less, we end up doing more in the amount of time that we are working.

these devices , unfortunately> deprived us of excercise that we need to stay healthy, all the time " saved" is now spent at the gym working off the lard we accumulated by letting devices do all our work for us. In other cases, automation has simply made more money for the boss, the rest of us still have to work longer hours to live.

Because people at rest could potentially improve themselves and be motivated to get involved in government. The plan is to keep all of us workers too busy to think and too busy thanking God for Friday to ever mount a proper bloody coup.

Always notice how businesses run on the model of hiring the least amount of workers to do the most amount of work and keep them perpetually swamped. If you go to the bank in the morning, there is only one register open and a line 15 people long. When lunchtime rolls around, more people come to cash checks, so they open more registers... but never... NEVER will they open enough registers to lighten the load on the tellers. They'll just have four tellers for a line 60 people long, keep them perpetually swamped and drain their energy to keep the worker placid.

That way the teller doesn't bother to think about her manager, who makes 8x as much per hour and plays solitaire for a living.

They make more money for the busines by enabling you do do more work in less time. You are not the person rewarded. Your "Big Boss' (CEO) has a lot more FREE time and money because you are producing more in less time. Go to the Golf course and ask Him/Her.
