If it's the latter, the process is called oxidation. You learn about it in Chemistry.

If it's the former, this is my take:
When you love someone and care so deeply for her, she's everything in the world to you (like a candle burning so brightly). But after a while your feelings changed; you realized that she's not really good for you and all of a sudden, she's no longer the bright light. You don't find her appealing and attractive anymore. The light has faded to oblivion.
