Mobile homes or trailers have a long history in the United States and the history says this: They always devalue (go down) over time. Mobile homes never sell for more than they originally did unlike traditional homes for which appreciation is the rule and not the exception.
Modular homes are like traditional homes (they are built to the same code), and they appreciate in the same manner as do traditional "stick built" homes.
As to which is cheaper it is perhaps time to quote one of those dead white guys....Ben Franklin: "Quality is always cheaper."

Mobile homes are cheaper than modular homes; however, mobile homes generally decrease in value, so if you decide to sell it a few years down the road, you won't make any money off of it. Modular homes retain their value better and can earn a profit for you if you decide to sell. Also, modular homes are better built than mobile homes, and you'll be able to finance them more easily than a mobile home.

Mobile homes that are double wide are cheaper, but a modular home usually has more strength and will survive stronger winds in a storm.

I would suggest living in the cheapest apartment you can get until you can afford to buy a tiny little house.
