I read this book in the late sixties early seventies.
All I remember is the bear is orphand when its mum is killed, it then has to find its own way, as it gets older it is the biggest bear in the woods and leaves his mark by scratching a tree as high as he can.Older still he goes for daily dips in a sulphur spring to ease his aches and pains, then a clever young bear comes to his patch and with the aid of a stump? scratches higher than the old bear.
When the old bear sees the scratch marks he thinks there is a new and more powerful bear so he goes off to die.
If anyone knows the Title/author I would be really grateful.

hi im not sure about that book, but if you knwo the storys beggining, middle and end...why not tell them the story and add bits to it, like change some of the names to people they know...they will be even more attentive and they will think more of you as it seems that you are the one making the story! you could change the settings to places near you or something like that?

your going to be very lucky to find that book again with out that information..

hope that helps you in the event you dont find it.

keep well

I know this does not help but I don't know the book... although it sounds very familiar.

If you can't get your answer then check out the book "Where the Red Fern Grows"... its not about a bear but its a great natural book about a boy who gets 2 dogs to hunt racoons during the Depression. The male dog dies in a hunting accident and the female dog dies of loneliness without him. Its a great book for kids interested in the outdoors.

It might be by Jim Kjelgaard. Sounds familiar.

Check with your local librarian.
