I have a '96 Town Car. Sense yesterday, the engine shakes on idle. While in park (P), the engine rocks the whole car from side to side almost like its hula hopping. While in drive (D) the car acts as if it wants to stall but never does. Just a lot of stuttering. While driving, however, the car is fine. The check engine light also is on. Also, once the car is off, it works hard to start. It chugs away for 6 seconds or so before it cuts over. Any help would be great. Thanks.

Yep I'll get Harold to grab the duct tape. We'll be right over....

Or if you want you can change the EGR valve that would be a start. Sounds very symptomatic of the ol' EGR checkin out...Could also be a gigantic vacuum leak.

listen for a sucking sound that isn't coming from your wallet....

That's not funny Harold....

It's called bad gas why be cheap buy the good kind. HEy a Lincoln should run on good gas so put some gas cleaner in it and try it again shoudl work fine after while. the gas cleaner, and also gas injector cleaner shoudl aslo work. Here's a quick hint, when you go fill up and you see a gas truck filling the pumps up drive away because it's stiring everything it has at the bottom of the tank and if you fill your car with gas all the sediment will go into your car and doesn't help.

I would have to say that sounds like you have either a bad plug, wire, or coil pack. however this being a 4.6 liter there's also the possibility of probably valve to piston contact caused by the timing chain jumping. since the check engine light is on I would suggest getting the codes read in it to verify what the onboard computer is telling it is wrong. once you have the codes then you will have a good idea of what the mystery problem is. best bet is misfire or fuel system problem in the injectors.

Sounds like you have a fuel problem, maybe the fuel filter or fuel pump, but check you aircleaner to make sure it's not plugged while car is running. You may have a vaccum leak but I doubt it.

The car needs a tune up.Take the air filter out and try it,it sounds like it is starving for air.But get a tune up when can.
