I had my mirena for almost 5 years now. When I had it inserted, the gyn was actually practicing on me.... I don't recommend that all, ask your gyn how familiar she is with IUDs!!!!!! Make sure she has inserted many before you..... insertion was painful.... I felt dizzy and had bad cramps for couple of days... then I was spotting all the time and with constant cramps for 2 months. I felt nauseaus very often. Since it was so expensive I decided to wait for a little longer and see.
I'm glad I did, by 5 months my cramps were gone, I get a very light period that last one day, and I don't even realize is there. I think is the best long-term reversible BC out there (I was on the depo shot and the side effects were horrible, no side effects w mirena). I love it. I will be getting a replacement soon, the problems in the beginning are definitely worth it.

I got my Mirena in May of 2004, insertion was pretty painless. Spotted constantly for the first few months which is normal. I haven't had any complaints about it till a couple of weeks of ago, when I went to the dr. and they couldn't find the strings. During this time I have cramps constantly some so bad I couldn't stand up straight. I also fell like I have constant pressure on my bladder. The dr. took blood and urine samples to rule out any kind of infection. So am curious what is causing my pain. They then sent me to the hospital for a pelvic ultrasound to see if was still there. The tech, thought she saw what she thought to be the IUD. I am waiting to go on friday to my ob to find out where it is. I am having it removed and going back on the pill.

I have had Mirena since last year, and I love it. It was uncomfortable to have inserted (pinched and cramped a bit) and I had cramps for a few days afterward, but no worse than regular menstrual cramps. Since then, I have only had one light period. They have completely stopped now (gotta love that!). My husband told me he could feel the strings poking him the first month or so, but they coiled up and are not an issue anymore. I would definitely recommend it! Check out the website for more info.

Positive:
No period since insertion
No weight gain
No PMS
No need to worry
Don't feel it
Negative:
Spotted for 5 months very lightly tho esp after sex (just like when you wipe no need for a liner or pad)
Acne (however I have It under control with the right wash and lotion)
To help with the cramps and with insertion take ibuprofen 40 min before your appointment and continue to take it for 2 days after insertion
