It's not so much the swelling as it is getting used to having something in your mouth. Just make sure to rinse well and often as your piercer suggests and talk a little slower than you normally would to make sure you enunciate your words until you get used to the piercing. Good luck!

Do it on a Friday so you have the weekend to recoop. Despite what you do, for the first day or 2 you will talk funny because your tongue will swell up. Take Ibuprofen an hour before you have it done because it's an anti-inflammatory and keep ice handy and a small bottle of diluted listerine. You should be good in about 3 days if you're constant with it.

Try as you might you will talk funny for the first few days. You can try suck on ice cubes, but it will only help a bit. Rinse with listerene alot if you are sucking on cubes, you dont want to get infected. Other than that I would really recomend getting it done before days off at work and then taking a few extra days holiday time to let things heal. You wont be able to talk very well and talking will only irratate things and your tounge will hurt.
As for the scare tatic website, please dont even bother with it. Just make sure you rinse with listerene after you put anything in your mouth. Do not rub your barbell on your gums or teeth or play with it then you should be fine as far as gum and enamle damage go. Mine only bled a speck of blood. They scare you by saying you could bleed too much, a professional knows what they are doing and they will not pierce through those viens. So don't let them scare you :)

i have had
tragus
nose
nipples
belly
tongue
labret
ears
top ear
horizortal hood
and
xtina piercing done..
and i can tell you x tina was by far the most painful and then nipples hurt the most
my nipples were hard when he pierced them..it was horrible..
tongue actually hurt the least
i had no numbing or anything
i think it is because your tongue is really soft the needle just pushes straight through.
im not going to lie about the pain the next day though..but i did have a flu at the time so my pain was probably worse but i have the sorest throat and could hardl talk the next day and i could not poke my tongue out for about 4 days
to keep swelling down gargle salt water, get some mouth wash but get the one that is alcohol free, and each ice alot, and slushies/slurpies cold drinks ice blocls and etc

As with all forms of skin and soft tissue "damage", salt has the benefit of helping to kill off almost ALL germs and viruses, it also helps to heal the body faster too! As for swelling, go with some Ibuprofen and sugar-free Popsicles. Plus, the Popsicles have the added benefit of pain-relief AND taste very nice! F.Y.I., stay away from ALL things with milk, spices, alcohol, carbonation and straws for the first two to four weeks to help your tongue heal faster. Also, when your all healed up, go and get a shorter bar set so you're not hitting the top and bottom of your mouth all the time. You can also use a lip stud as they have a flat side along with a ball of the other end. The labrae stud also helps to keep the underside of your tongue from being rubbed raw when talking on the phone all day, expecially if you also have a cold too!

I would suggest having it done on a Friday, giving yourself two days to recover! That is really the worst, the first day and the next two. I sucked on lots of ice and even "soaked" my tongue in ice water. Make sure you use the mouthwash they recommend ( i dont remember which one it was, it has been 7 years!). The day after, I was questioning my decision to have it done, but I hung in there and I still have it 7 years later! I love it! Also, make sure they do it as far back as they can, so that it is less noticeable at work!
GOOD LUCK!!! ENJOY IT!!

Your tongue is definitely going to swell up and impede your speech. You might want to take a couple of days off of work while you're healing and the swelling is at its worst. Suck on LOTS of ice. Good luck!

Please check out this website BEFORE you have it done. http://www.drhendry.ca/InfoAndLinks/TonguePiercing/Piercing.html It's probably the most dangerous piercing. I hope you have informed your employer and they don't have a problem with it. I fired a receptionist for exactly that as she could no longer fulfill the phone portion of her job to my satisfaction. She sounded like she had a speech impediment.
Good luck.
