People will disagree, obviously, but a short list of candidates might include Leo Tolstoy, Feodor Dostoevsky, Marcel Proust, Charles Dickens, Miguel de Cervantes, Victor Hugo ... all writers of big books. For shorter fiction, maybe Anton Chekhov or Guy de Maupassant.
I don't think Shakespeare counts, since he was a playwright, and I would exclude all modern pop fiction authors on principle (I'm a snob).

Hard question... the first answer that popped into my head was "Kurt Vonnegut," but if I think about it too much longer I'll have a whole list and start debating myself.
