My soon to be 4 month old son screamed his little body to sleep, after 4 hours. He ate last at 630 this morning. He takes 6 ounce cereal bottles. Not much cereal, only 2 tsp. Hes a big boy, he weighs 16 lbs 9 oz. He done okay from 7 am until 1030 am, from then on, he screamed at least 10 full minutes at a time, giving me and his father 2 minute intermissions. We thought at first he was hungery, that didnt solve it. He had a ear infection, for which he is still taking his medicene. The doc saw him yesterday, and said his ear looked excellent. So, we gave him his antibiotic and some tylenol, hoping to ease the pain. That didnt help. I didnt want to "drug him up" so I decided no motrin right now. So on he goes then proceeds to vomit x2. I just figured since he was crying so hard, that was the reason. Well, he continued to cry, and continued to vomit thick clear mucus. He done that about 4 times. I called his peditricain and he is out of the office today, wonderful, huh??! contuned...

We have a local hospital, dubbed the Band-Aid Station, if you get my drift. The E-Room, is none the best. The closest good hospital to me is 45 minutes away. It is all worth going to find out what is wrong, but my husband frinally got him to drink a formula bottle, with no cereal in it and hes been asleep now for 30 minutes. I dont want to bother him, I know his little body is tired. My actual question is does anyone have any opinions as to what could be wrong? We started feeding him baby food (doc's advice) and found that no matter what we tried, his little tummy just could not tolerate it. He has been taking cereal bottles since he was 2 1/2 months. Do you really think that 1 1/2 months later, his little tummy would be working against him on the cereal to? Sorry this is so long, please give me some good advice. We stopped giving him baby food, because everytime he ate it, about 10-15 minutes later, he would scream his little head off for about 30 minutes.

Sorry, I didnt clarify that, he is on anti-biotics because he has a right ear infection. I gave him the tylenol to ease the pain.

I never had this many problems with my daughter, shes 3 1/2 now. I would use orajel, but it numbs the entire mouth, and I personaaly think it would make them feel worse, since they wouldnt be able to feel anything in their mouth. Thanks tho

We were using Gerber Baby cereal, Oatmeal. We quickly switched off of that to the Rice. We noticed very quickly that he couldnt handle the oatmeal. Heres something that might be helpful, probably shoulda mentioned sooner. When he was born, they started him out on Similac Advance. We brought him home and he done okay for a few days. Then he started in with diarreha. The docs said it was meconium, that it would stop soon. NOT... His little butt got so bad that it started blisteirng and bleeding, so I took it upon myself to change formula. So we switched to Similac Isomil Advance.Hmm... that worked for a while, but gave him belly aches because it constipated him. Finally, after 2 months, we put him on Similac Lactose Free. What a wonderful product!!! When compared we realized that similac advance has both milk and soy ingriedients in it, silmilac isomil has only soy, and the lactose free has only milk ingridients.

Kepp a close eye that he doesn't dehydrate. Does he have diarrhea? Maybe the antibiotics are causing him gas pains - try some mylicon drops to see if it helps. If he gets a fever, or doesn't quit vomiting, he should be seen - even go the the ER if his Dr. is not available, or has left no one as a referral in his absence. Hang in there - its tough when they can't tell you what is wrong!
Try putting something warm (not hot!) against his ear if he's tugging at it (although if it looked ok yesterday, it would most likely be fine today).
Be REALLY careful with things like oragel, especially if he's vomiting! The saliva in a baby's mouth can wash some of the medication to the back of the mouth, thereby numbing the back of the throat and subduing the gag reflex. It can cause them to choke - especially if he's bringing stuff up. He could be getting a tooth, if it is you should be able to see it below the gums in the front (usually bottom 2 come in first). It sounds more like an illness or reaction to the meds than teething, imo.
Are you using rice cereal? Have you tried switching to bran? There might be an allergy...
Some kids take a little longer for theirdigestive systems to mature, and to be able to digest food. Definitely ask the Dr the next time you go for a check-up.
Thanks for the additional info... based on the problems you've had with the formulas, I would say that you definitely do need to consider the reflux, and also allergies/sensitivities to the medicine & cereals. There is obviously something that he is not tolerating well.

When he throws up does he do this everytime after he eats...5, 10, 15, and even as long as 30 minutes after he eats.
My son did that give your baby Pedialite. between meals/bottles.
call your doctors office again and tell them you are worried and that you need to talk to the doctor now and give the person on the phone your name and number. They have to call the doctor.
Now what my son had they never thought he could have and its called G.E.R.D. stands for gastroesophageal reflux disease. My son was 2 months old when this was happening and we lived near the best hospital in las vegas. They called family services and said I was poisioning my son cause babys this little cant get GERD at all. Well they were wrong and said sorry so the study of this in infants grew big time and found babys can have it. So all you have to do is take your son to the hospital and tell them what is going on. They can give him a ultrasound of his belly to see if food is going through or not. My sons wasn't and they fixed that by feeding him 1oz ever hour then it went up over the next month to a normal feeding of his age. So its a fixable thing with no surgery at all. Now I will put a few web pages down and you can read to see if this is what is going on. If not great its a good thing trust me.
For now when your son sleeps take a pillow and put it under his crib mattress so that he is elevated just a bit you can use anything that will not let the mattress move. Its good for all baby's to be like this.
If this dont sound like your baby then still get a doctor to look at your baby.

First give him the once and twice over fulll body check. Make sure there are no string or anything poking him or cutting off his circulation. Usually babies don't start eating till 4 months or so. Does he have daily bowel movements? He could be constipated or gassey. try a warm bath and a light massage. If he hasn't had a BM try a little diluted prune or pear juice. For gas he made need to be burped. When he eats or drinks do you feed him or does he hold the bottle? you may need to burp him during the feedings rather than just at the end. The vomting is probably from the crying. Try rubbing his gums if its teething that will help some. The oragel is cool for teething if thats what it is. Be sure to give him fluids, maybe some pedialyte if his fluid intake has droped off.
I hope he feels better soon!

My son started teething when he was two months old. He ran fevers, had stuffy nose with thick drainage, slobbering all over the place, diarrhea, gas, and painful screams. The doctor told me at his 4 month checkup he was too young to be teething. My mother and mother in law said he was teething. I couldn't figure out what could be wrong. He seemed to be in such agony. By his 6 month checkup, he had two teeth and working on two more. Sometimes the doctor's don't know everything. I am still glad I made sure everything else was okay, though. It could have been strep or something more serious. Try some baby Orajel and see if he responds to it. If he is teething it will help, along with a frozen teething ring and Infant Tylenol or Children's Ibuprofen. If this doesn't help, take him to an E.R. or back to your doctor.

He could be teething b/c my son's first two teeth popped through at 4 months old. But this is not normal behavior for teething. As someone previously stated, it could be Acid Reflux. My son was diagnosed with it when he was 3 1/2 months old. He was put on Zantac 1 ml three times a day. We also put him on Enfamil AR formula which has fortified rice starch in it. Thankful Acid Reflux is something that they can outgrow. My son has finally at 7 months old. The spitting up mucus could be from being too upset for too long. Does his belly make a gurgling noise? Does his spit up become projectile? If so, definitely talk to your dr. about Acid Reflux. You could try gas drops, but if it is Acid Reflux it will not completely help, but my alleviate some of the pain.

have you tried oragel? there is a baby oragel that helps the pain of teething. let him suck on a cold cloth with a piece of sliced apple in it, don't let him eat the apple if he isn't able to, but it should help the pain. if he is working on the stomach teeth aka kaynines they can make babies throw up, and some babies do just throw up when teething is happening, every baby is different. i would try the motrin if you have some. you want him to be pain free right.
hope i helped

It sound like he has acid reflux. My son is that way. He will spit up 2-3 hours after his last meal. Could also be gas.

You gave him antibiotics to ease the pain???!!! I can't believe a doctor would prescribe antibiotics to a 3 month old for no reason. And how could you accept that as a normal treatment for teething?
Anyway, if he is teething just try teething tablets, they sell them at Babies R Us.
