My son attends a very nice Christian school. I have one problem, though. When he was first admitted we were told that they followed the same guide as the public schools, at least for the basic subjects, including math.
I am concerned that my son's teacher is lagging in teaching math. I saw some paperwork from friends of his who attend public school and they seem to adhead of what she is teaching. Plus, she teaches it very basically. I work with him at home to learn more advanced procedures but I would just like to see if anyone can give the input as to what their fourth grader is currently learning in math. Thanks.

I taught fourth grade last year. I am not sure what your son is learning now, but I can give you a summary of what I taught....

graphing
review addition and subtraction
multiplication and division
beginning algebra
problem solving strategies
word problems
fractions (simplifying, equivalent, etc)

This is all I can remember at this time....I do remember that most of our time was spent on multiplication and division due to my students needing the most help there.

That is something else to keep in mind. Each class is different. They have their own stregnths and weaknesses and teachers have the flexibility, in some cases, to work on the weaknesses and spend more time on them and breeze through where class stregnths are. So think about the rest of his class.

Also, if you feel the math is too easy for him, talk to the teacher about added enrichment for your son. The district I am in right now will provide added enrichment to students who show that they need it. It is a nice system. Always feel free to ask the teacher questions about expectations in math and what you see with your son. I know I always welcome communication with parents. As a teacher it really helps me to help the students knowing that the parents and I can work together!

Good luck, I hope this helps.....

Generally in fourth grade math involves, addition subtraction mutiplication and division of number up to 12. Perhaps some minor fractions, timed 100 tests, and coin change recognition.

If you feel your kid is not being challenged enough you should ask the teacher for either an advanced math course or additional challenge work.

Usually they start learning basic geometry, more advance fractions, long division, and a lot of word problems.
