That wasn't a frog. That was a compressed pocket of air being pushed out of the ground from the growing roots of an oak tree. About a hundred years ago there used to be a lake there, but it dried up. Then sod formed over some of the empty divots, making air pockets. Since that tree was planted, the roots are expanding near those pockets but they go right through them because, of course, there are no nutrients in the air. So the air is pushed out of the way of the roots (by the roots) and the small separation in the ground where the air came out made a little vibrating noise that you mistook for a frog. There was actually a frog sitting right next to it but he's mute.
