That can be a bit dangerous to answer. I a perfect world... the black wire would be the "Hot" wire... but in a lot of cases this would not necessarily be true. It would be best to use a tester to be sure and make sure you turn the power off while you have exposed wire. You should keep in mind that you don't know who worked on your electrical before you... there is no way for you to know if they knew what they were doing.

like the others have said. to find out for sure, go to your local hardware store and get a tester that will plug into the outlet and show you if it is wired correctly. it will look like an adapter that you would use to plug a three prong plug into a two hole outlet, and have three l e d lights on the end. this will tell you if you have a ground, if polarity is reversed, etc. they run around $7-10.00. of course the circuit will need to be on to test it so use caution when working on it, or turn it off when you are done testing it. good luck, hope this helps.

theoretically both can be considered hot.....AC current just makes a continuous loop. Black is usually what most refer to as the hot, but white can be hot also.......The one thing that's usually always right.....Green is grnd. I suggest getting a cheap volt meter, and testing the wires. They make some now that are very easy to operate. Good luck

Green or bare wire= ground, white= neutral, all other colors could be hot. if you have any doubt call an electrician, electricity can and will kill you if you make a mistake.

black is hot... white is neutral...bare is ground....be careful some times when wiring a switch leg with the feed in the light electricians will make the white hot going down to the switch...they are supposed to tape it black but often do not.
