Not much, most of time the garbage collectors just through them anywhere so there is nothing that you can do. One way to assure that if they do blow away that you will get them back is to write you last name and address on both the cans and their lids. Most of the time if a neighbor finds them, they will bring them back to your address.

I had that exact same problem until last summer. I lost half a dozen trash cans and a doghouse because of the dang winds! I live in the hills of western California where it is surprisingly windy during the wintertime. For years I tried to solve the problem using all sorts of ideas. I tried nailing the trashcans to the ground, but it ended up tearing the trashcans! I tried placing large rocks inside the trashcans, but that meant I had little room for trash and the trash always tore and the garbage man couldn't pick up the trashcans. After more than 8 years of failed attempts, I finally came up with a sure-fire way to solve the problem: build a cage-like box to house the trashcans. The trashcans have a roof to prevent rain from getting into them. The cage is secure enough so that animals won't get inside them. It has two doors in the front which open up like a gate so that the trashcans can be easily taken out and put back in. The whole thing was made out of wood so it was heavy enough to stop wind but cheap enough not to cost me a fortune. It's not nailed to the ground so it doesn't damage anything and it can be moved to another location if you need it! It's a very simple design. About 4 and a 1/2 feet tall, 5 feet wide, and 3 feet long. It's in a box shape so it doesn't require a lot of skill to make. In total, I spent less than 40 dollars building it. I used 5 large pieces of plywood. One piece measured 5 feet by 3 feet for the roof. Two pieces measured 4 and a half feet by 3 feet for the sides. One piece measured 4 and a half feet by 5 feet for the back. The final piece was split evenly into two pieces for the doors. Both pieces were 4 and a half feet tall and 2 and a half feet long. The cage houses one standard trash can provided by the California trash collectors and a bottle recycling can also standard size but larger than the trash can. Hope this helps!

We got tired of this too, plus the pickup crews kept denting them, we lost a professional ($85) 75 gal heavy duty size container (thanks to the wind).
We chained them in the back (to the porch).
We used the large heavy duty trash bags as liners and when they were full (or on trash days) pulled them out, tied them shut and put those out instead. Now everyone does it and the trash men love it as all they have to do grab them and sling them into the truck. ( Some are so good that when there is only one bag out the truck doesn't even have to stop)
Down side some get ripped open by Loose Dogs, Cats, Squirrels, Possums and Raccoons.
Sprayed ours with "Dogs Off" (pet store product).
Good Luck ! ! ! (Our Trash Cans are still New, Shiny Clean and no dents).

You can avoid getting loose skin by losing weight slowly, which you plan to do. You're young so your skin still has a lot of elasticity, it will snap back. Toning exercises 3 times a week, yoga, Pilates, ab work outs, etc, REALLY help too. And skin firming lotions also help. Don't worry about it, your skin will be firm when you're done.

How about asking a neighbor, who is home, to take them in for you? A batch of brownies, or a 6 pack of something would be a nice gesture.
