You probably saw Braveheart on the TV already right? May I suggest "The Wallace" by Nigel Tranter. There are some really gory bits in the book, but I think most 13 year olds nowadays see worse at the cinema (certainly more than I did at 13) & it is a gripping "true story" read. I couldn't put it down once I started it.

The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-time by Mark Haddon.
It's about a 15 year old boy who discovers a dead dog in a neighbor's yard, and then goes on a quest to find the killer.
He has Aspergers Syndrome, and it's a brilliant book.

Philip Pullman's Dark Materials trilogy
Northern Lights
The Subtle Knife
The Amber Spyglass
They are brilliant everyone should read them young and old. I'm 40 and only read them a few years ago on the advice of my sister in law who was reading them with her kids. You won't want to put them down. Enjoy

I reckon you'd love 'Tom's Midnight Garden' by Phillipa Pearce.
When the Grandfather clock strikes 13, a magical door opens into a secret garden. The people in the garden are from a bygone age and ..............
I won't tell you any more in case you want to read it !
Not childish but certainly not too adult.

The Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich is brilliant! It's about a struggling bounty hunter who's rather inept! They get better as they go along too. Superbly funny but with grown up themes aswell. Not to be taken too seriously, but not plain rediculous either. Dick Francis is also very good. I started reading his books around your age and still enjoy them (I'm 27). Good luck. x
