Oklahoma began as worthless territory -- nobody at the time had a notion that petroleum might be worth money -- ceded to what are called The Five Civilized Nations (hmm, let me think. Cherokees, Seminoles, Chickasaws...) in compensation for the Jackson Administration's major initiative in driving them out of the southeast, where they had lived for centuries and were no threat to anyone.
