I bought a Epiphone SG-400 Custom recently and the stock pickups are crap so im replacing the lot. I've already purchased new neck and bridge pickups but haven't fitted them yet. Is there any need to replace my middle PU???? Can I use a neck or bridge PU in the middle??? will that work?? but will replacing the middle PU make any difference because the other two PU are top notch. Any suggestions?

What are you going to use the middle pickup for?

Will you be using it with the bridge mainly, or with the neck? for Lead or Ryhthm?

What pickups have you already got as the bridge and neck replacements?

To be honest, I would put in the replacements and see what the guitar sounds like first. Then decide how you need to alter that sound (e.g. more low end definition, more brilliance and clarity at the high end, more power, or what) and then find a pickup thet delivers what you need. Look first at the manufacturer of the new pickups you already have.

Alternatively, go for something completely different, like a P90 type, that would give you a whole new sound. this would be a good choice if your new pickups cover the ground you want already.

I don't see the point of just telling you what my favourite pickups are, because my taste is probably different to yours.
