I worked in Kinshasa last year....there's a few nice restaurants (owned by French and Belgians usually), other little holes in the wall with great (GREAT) music and barbeque chicken. Gombe is the diplomatic enclave. It's relatively safe but it can be tense on certain days (student protests, election annoucements, etc.). Very few places take a credit card (only the two big hotels, Grand and Memling). I went to DRC expecting to hate it but I enjoyed my time there. Eastern DRC is beautiful -- too bad it's still a bit unstable.
