At 1:42 a.m. on March 1, 1910, thunderstorms dislodged a half-mile-wide snow shelf high in the Cascade Mountains near Stevens Pass. The resulting avalanche roared down the hillside, barely missed the town of Wellington, but slammed into two trains that had been trapped near the town for almost a week due to incessant snowfall. Locomotives, carriages, and 125 passengers and crew members were swept away down the mountainside in what became the deadliest avalanche disaster in U.S. history.

Blasts from the Past, Here at Last
Switched Seats: Thirty-five years after President Millard Fillmore established Washington Territory, Okanogan County chose the mining town of Ruby City as its first county seat on March 7, 1888. Unfortunately for Ruby City, voters were so disgusted that a town of "whores, thieves, and drunkards" should represent the county's interests that the seat was moved to Conconully.

Pitched Streets: The newly flattened Denny Regrade was slated for an ornate Civic Center in Seattle's first and most audacious comprehensive plan. Engineer Virgil Bogue's urban vision excited the new Municipal League but alarmed downtown interests -- and voters, who trounced it on March 5, 1912.
