He's won hundreds of games. The graduation rate of his players is well above average. Former players love and appreciate him. Is he the whipping boy for a ratings-starved media machine?

Because unlike most coaches, he doesn't worship the media. He knows that the media are composed of a bunch of idiots and he tells the truth. They don't like being outed as idiots so they slam him and hope that you follow their every world like mindless sheep.

A collegiate coach is there to do three things win, folow NCAA rules, and graduate players. No one does all three things collectively better then Knight.

it should be easy to see why the media likes to vilify him: his history of news-making incidents...tossing the chair across the court, choking his player in practice, and most recently the incident with slapping his player's chin to get the player to look at him(which was definitely overblown by the press)...there have been so many incidents and also comments like previously mentioned that make him a figure that the media goes after

Wow, well put. Ratings, ratings, ratings. It's as simple as that. People (ESPN) love to see Knight in trouble so that's what we get. And about the comment about rape being inevitable, that is called a sense of humor, who are you the p.c. police?

His intensity gets carried away - and like the first response points out, the guys says things that are obnoxious. He'd also make a lousy neighbor.

How about his hunting acumen - shooting his buddy in the back, and then pressuring him to lie about it.

He is fairly close to what I'd call a 'villain'

Because anyone who responds to a female reporter the following: "If rape is inevitable, you might as well just lay back and enjoy it." either has some serious personal issues, or is simply a pig.
