If you have time, you may be able to find a real one on Ebay. There is a type of typewriter known as a suitcase typewriter which is a small portable kind of typewriter for reporters, traveling sales people, etc. Problem is, they are probably expensive since they are collectables. You could have your propmaker make up a fake one, just a wooden case, and have the sound effects crew cue in the typing noise where it is needed. The typewriter sound could be stored on a sampling type music keyboard where it can instantly be brought up on cue. We used this method for thunder, hail, the sound of a window breaking, etc. Just put your hands to the fake typewriter and move your fingers when the sound starts, and try to make sure to stop when the sound stops.

If you want to go authentic, you may have to find one through a props dept. Most typewriters like Snoopy would use are becoming collectibles and if you use a computer keyboard, the kids won't know the difference because many of them have never seen a typewriter and wouldn't know how to use a manual one.
