hi,
I do not know if there is a "lawful killing". In the military, almost all killed are lawfully killed, sometimes said to be friendly fire, if it is their own. Some people involved in unlawful activity, and killed by the law agencies may be called lawful killings. Executions are considered lawful killings. An act of self defense, where a shopowner being robbed shoots the thief, the killing can be categorized a lawful killing in some places.
Unlawfully killed, which happened here recently, is the person was mistakenly shot because the police shot him thinking he was carrying a weapon, and when they got to his dead body, they found he was carrying a small piece of plastic and it didn't resemble a weapon. Unless it is a fleeing suspect, most people shot in the back are unlawfully killed.
Where the killing is justified in theory and by law, it is categorized a lawful killing. I hope this helps you, and you weren't a victim or relative of something as this. It can be complicated grief, and I hope this uncomplicates some of this for you. Thank you.

Hi... Unlawful killings are those where someone has been killed by someone else otherwise than in accordance with the law - eg. murder, war-crimes, etc. etc. UK law says you may use reasonable force to protect yourself and others. If you or someone else is about to be killed by someone else, and it is your genuine belief that this will happen if you don't take action, you can pre-empt that person and kill them first. This is classed as a lawful killing. This also would cover things like the person that presses the button on the electric chair for someone being executed for committing a crime. Hope this helps.

You have opened a bee`s nest with that question.
It covers not only civilian but also military `lawful`, `unlawful`, killings.
Before you decided to inject such a question, forethought should and ought to have prevailed in your mind.
There are many websites on this topic that will probably give varied and maybe wonderous answers to this open question.
Not being a member of the `bar` I await with baited breath for some crazy and wonderous answers/responses to your very interesting question.
P.S. It seems that some have already joined the school of uneducated. What a pity for this country and its innocence.
