The best way is a VPN. If you've got a domain, you need to set up routing and remote access to allow and authenticate VPN connections. If you've got a workgroup, you'll need a router that supports VPN connections (something has to do the authentication).
Step 1 is preparing your network for VPN, either through RRAS or the router. Step 2 is creating a vpn connection from the remote computer via network connections.
