x = ?

There's two ways:
1. Change the side, change the sign

Put all the numeric items on one side (ie, 3 and 12) and the letters on the other so
5x-2x = 12-3 (When you swap a number or letter, change the sign eg when you swap +3 over make it -3)
5x-2x is 3x and 12-3 is 9
so 3x = 9
9 divided by 3 = 3
x=3

or you can do it
2. Balancing out both sides

5x+3 = 12+2x
Minus 2x from both sides so you get
3x + 3 = 12
Change the sides like in the first one
3x= 12-3
3x=9
9 divided by 3 = 3
x = 3

You can check it works by going to the original equation which is 5x+3 = 12 + 2x
If x = 3, 5x is 15 and 2x is 6, so the equation goes
15+3 = 12+6
Both equal 18 so it's right

I don't know if I put that down very well but I hope it helps

5x + 3 = 12 + 2x (get the x's on the same side)
5x -2x +3 = 12 +2x -2x
3x +3 = 12 (get the 3 to the other side)
3x +3 -3 = 12 - 3
3x = 9 (divide both sides by 3)
3x/3 = 9/3
x=3
