Because they are warm blooded. The additional food is used in part to maintain body temperature. Reptiles do not need this since they rely on other means to maintain body temperature.

It takes more energy to maintain body heat and still have energy in reserve for hunting, flying, etc.

They are both endothermic (warm blooded). About 1/3 of your daily calorie intake goes to keeping you warm, even more in cooler conditions.

Actually, it has to do with their body mass, but you did forget about reptiles (The snakes, crocodiles and aligators often eat prey that are larger than themselves!)
