There are many specifics of greenhouses. Stability is number one. It has to withstand the weather and winds so a strong frame is paramount. It also needs to insulate the plants within from the elements. This usually means a heat source of some type such as gas, wood or oil furnaces. Then there is the changing of air inside which requires fans and damper openings. You will also need humidity control. Yes, you can build your own. It's just a lot of work and it still isn't cheap.

Green houses, among other things, will keep foul weather off of delicate seedlings so they can grow even in inclement weather. Just a few days ago, I bought a little 'greenhouse' that is actually more of a clear plastic tent. I was lucky to find one in a discount place for about $25.

Check DIY.Com: you might be able to find plans and prices for building a greenhouse relatively cheaply, if you want a more permament structure.

Greenhouses are important because they allow light to filter through to plants without letting in all of the cold and wind of winter. Very important if you want to start plants from seed early in the spring and then plant them outside when the weather warms up.

Yes, you can build one. I've seen them build of old windows and frames. However, there are several kits available through garden centers and stores. Do a quick search online and you'll find lots of kits as well as plans for building them from scratch yourself. Good luck.

Dude,
Don't spend a dime. Wait a few more years when Al Gore and the rest of his ilk say the entire world will be ablaze in green-house heat. You'll be able to grow orchids at the north pole in January
